History

In the first hundred years Wanganui Central Baptist had seventeen pastors as the church went through different seasons – good times and difficult times – but always presenting to the community the evangelistic gospel and the gospel of compassion.

The first building owned by the church was constructed in Ingestre Street and opened in 1891, and in 1973 a two hundred and fifty seat new building was erected, adjoining the original structure.  By our centennial year in 1982, leaders were again thinking of more space and the seed of our present building complex was sown with the formation of a new building committee.

Bruce Patrick was our senior pastor for the one hundred year celebrations and it was during his ministry that the Craft Club and Kindergarten were started. Both are still thriving.

The heart of the Christian church has always been to glorify God in worship, in evangelism, and in practising the gospel of compassion. These things are at the centre of all that we do.

It is hard to categorise our church under any one heading, such as Conservative, Charismatic, Evangelistic, Pentecostal or Baptist.

There are many activities making our fellowship a “people place”. These include Early Childhood Ministries, Children's Ministries, Youth Ministries, New Church Planting, Music Ministry and Global Ministries. And many other groups enrich our church life such as Small Groups, Women’s Ministries, Men’s Ministries, Craft Club, Senior Citizens, BMF, Prison Ministries, Bible in Schools and Intercessors.

Throughout its history the church has been well served by lay people and its pastoral staff.
